I have worked in the field of performing arts management for over forty years, starting in theatre and contemporary dance before moving into opera via two years as an opera stage manager. After learning my trade during eight years in the Opera Planning Department of English National Opera (1974 - 1982), I was appointed to Scottish Opera as Controller of Planning (1982 - 1986), moving on to Welsh National Opera in the same position (1986 - 1989). From 1989 to 1998 I was at Glyndebourne, as Director of Artistic Administration for the Glyndebourne Festival and Administrator of Glyndebourne Touring Opera.

In 1998 I left Glyndebourne to become a freelance arts consultant. Since then my clients have included the BBC (television, radio, BBC Symphony Orchestra; BBC Concert Orchestra), Almeida Opera, Rork Music (San Francisco), the Bethlehem 2000 Project, First China (Guangdong) International Singing Competition (jury member), Welsh Singers' Competition (jury member 2004 & 2006), Savoy Opera and Tiger Aspect Productions / Channel 4 television. BBC projects have included FIGARO LIVE (BBCTV/CBTO), FLASHMOB - THE OPERA (Rose d'Or for Music 2005) and BRAND NEW FLASHMOB OPERA on BBC Three, and THE SECOND MRS KONG with the BBCSO.

Projects in recent years include the casting of a film of THE MAGIC FLUTE (Producer: Idéale Audience, Director: Kenneth Branagh, Conductor: James Conlon, premiered on 7 September 2006 in the Venice Film Festival (UK release November 2007).  Also ULYSSES COMES HOME (Director: Graham Vick, Conductor: Robert Howarth) (the final part of a two year Monteverdi project), HE HAD IT COMING (Don Giovanni) (Director: Graham Vick, Conductor: William Lacey), and THE ARIADNE PROLOGUE (Graham Vick/Ryan Wigglesworth) all for Birmingham Opera Company;  TOBIAS AND THE ANGEL and THE ENCHANTED PIG for The Young Vic / The Opera Group, MAN ON THE MOON (Rose d'Or for Opera 2007) for Tiger Aspect Productions / Channel 4 (all with the composer Jonathan Dove) and, for Tête à Tête, PUSH! and ODYSSEUS UNWOUND.

Work in 2007 included the summer season at Garsington Opera (IL RE PASTORE, LA DONNA DEL LAGO and ARIADNE AUF NAXOS), THE SILENT TWINS, a new opera by Errolyn Wallen/April de Angelis for Almeida Opera, LA TRAVIATA (for Birmingham Opera Company in Graham Vick's arena production from Verona) and BLIND DATE for Tête à Tête.

2008 brought a variety of work, amongst which highlights were IDOMENEO for Birmingham Opera Company; Garsington Opera (THE RAKE'S PROGRESS, COSI FAN TUTTE and L'INCORONAZIONE DI DARIO); VARJAK PAW for The Opera Group; Tête à Tête with their second Opera Festival at the Riverside Studios and THE CUMNOR AFFAIR ; and STREET SCENE The Young Vic / The Opera Group (Ned Sherrin Award for Best Musical at the Evening Standard Awards 2008).

Other projects in 2008 and 2009 included work with the Aldeburgh Festival (AN OCEAN OF RAIN and THE CORRIDOR) and The Sage Gateshead (SKELLIG), ongoing work with The Opera Group including  a revival of THE ENCHANTED PIG (Linbury/New Victory Theater, New York/UK tour in February 2010).  Tête à Tête projects included their Opera Festivals and SALAD DAYS, both at the Riverside Studios.  2009 ended with Graham Vick's production of OTHELLO for Birmingham Opera Company (shown on BBC2 in February 2011).

More recent work includes revivals of Tête à Tête's hit SALAD DAYS at the Riverside Studios December 2010 - February 2011 and STREET SCENE The Opera Group/The Young Vic, as well as new projects THE WEDDING (LES NOCES) with Birmingham Opera Company, SEVEN ANGELS (Luke Bedford/Glyn Maxwell/The Opera Group), PLEASURE'S PROGRESS (ROH2/Will Tuckett/Alasdair Middleton/Paul Englishby), CLEMENCY (James McMillan) and  LA VOIX HUMAINE for ROH2 at the Linbury, and DR DEE (Damon Albarn/Rufus Norris) for the Manchester International Festival 2011.

My regular long term clients include Garsington Opera (currently planning 2012 and future seasons in their wonderful new venue at Wormsley), Birmingham Opera Company, with Jonathan Dove's new opera LIFE IS A DREAM playing in March 2012, and Tête à Tête, who are mounting their next new opera (CIRCUS TRICKS by Mike Henry and Adey Grummet) at the Riverside, also in March 2012.  Damon Albarn's opera DR DEE will be revived at English National Opera in June/July 2012 as part of the Cultural Olympiad.

I specialise in artistic planning and opera casting, particularly in the field of young British singers, and am based in central London.

Clarification for singers: Please note that although I am happy to receive CVs, CDs and other material for perusal in my own time and for future reference (which may or may not lead to an audition or meeting), I am afraid that I am not able to give individual feedback on such material, nor on viewing of performances and auditions. Nor do I listen to individual auditions.  My job is to work for companies and projects, not as a personal advisor to singers. When I know a singer in greater depth through work, then an approach for informal advice may be more appropriate
